Students achieve place at the National Final in Chartered accounting competition

Maltby Academy has achieved a place at the National Final of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales’s academic competition BASE.

Our winning team of Year 12 students, Charlie Wroe, Alex Maddison, Andrew Hattersley and Cameron Cooper have beaten hundreds of other schools, including private and grammar schools, to be selected as one of the top 24 teams in the country.

They have progressed through the psychometric based scenarios and produced a video presentation which has been selected for the National Final. Unfortunately, COVID has dictated that this year's final will be virtual rather than in an all-expenses paid residential trip to Leeds, but nevertheless this is an outstanding achievement.

A spokesperson for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) said:

We received a large number of applicants this year and the standard of entries was particularly high. It is a fantastic achievement to reach the final and all your students should be very proud of their hard work."

BASE is the ICAEW free national business and accounting competition for 16-17 year olds across the UK. It allows students to experience taking part in team challenges; giving them an understanding of what it’s like to be an ICAEW Chartered Accountant whilst developing their key employability skills.

The National Final will take place on Wednesday 16th June - 2pm-4pm.

The winning team will taking home an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil each, £4000 cash for the school, a trip to London to meet the ICAEW CEO, Michael Izza, and a full day employability session.

Mr Hughes, Subject Leader of Computing and Business, said: "The boys have done outstandingly well to get this far in the competition. The talent has been so high, and we have placed higher in the competition than we ever have before. We can't wait for the final!"
