Personalised Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)
19/01/10One of our aims at Maltby Academy is that young people should become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. The development of Personalised Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) is an essential part of meeting these aims. PLTS have a considerable impact on young people's ability to enter work and adult life as confident and capable individuals who can make a positive contribution.
What are PLTS?
There are 6 PLTS:
Independent Enquirer | Team Worker | Creative Thinker |
Self-Manager | Reflective Learner | Effective Participator |
For more detailed information about each PLT please download the file at the bottom of the page.
How do we use them?
To ensure that PLTS form an integral part of our young people's learning experience we will be focusing on each of the six skills using a variety of teaching approaches at calendared intervals (initially) through our Y7 curriculum. Our aim is to ensure that students develop their skills for learning and apply them in all areas of their life. By recognising and evaluating the development of their skills we aim to equip students with the tools to allow them to make appropriate choices in learning and career pathways beyond Y7.
Year 7 students participate in 6 separate Skills Focus Weeks throughout the year (one for each PLT). For example, for one week every department area within Y7 will provide students with the opportunity to practice and self assess their Team Worker skills. The aim is to ensure students apply these skills across the curriculum and within their wider learning experiences.

Y7 Learning Team Projects
It is important that young people see the relevance and links between the content and skills within each subject area. Building on the success of the primary phase themed based learning, our Learning Teams have created exciting and engaging projects which address the Personal Learning and Thinking skills as well as giving students the opportunity to develop their literacy skills.
Throughout the year, Y7 students will take part in 4 Themed Projects which will link subjects and allow students to pursue an outcome common across the Learning Team. Each Project will be linked by a cross curricular dimension to be focused on such things as Enterprise, Healthy Lifestyles and Cultural Awareness. The project will be launched to students and will culminate in a showcase event to which parents and the wider community will be invited.
