You are embarking on a very important stage in your life. For the first time you can decide whether to stay on in formal Post 16 education for the next one, two, three years of your life. As the world of work becomes increasingly competitive it is worth having a look at the advantages that higher-level qualifications can bring. There is a clear link between lifetime earnings and good academic and vocational qualifications. Maltby Academy Sixth Form offers not only a wide range of courses but also the opportunity to develop greater maturity, become more confident and make new friends. Life at Maltby Sixth Form
As the senior students at Maltby Academy you will enjoy the comfort and privacy of your own Post 16 Centre; a separate building housing a suite of rooms exclusively for your own use. As Sixth Formers, you will enjoy access to a large, modern and comfortable Common Room in which you can relax between lessons, chat with friends, play cards and generally chill out. The atmosphere in and around the Post 16 area is relaxed and friendly - a welcoming new place to meet new friends as well as catch up with old ones.
Students are given more 'freedom' and you'll be treated as a young adult. You will be expected to take responsibility for yourself. You will be permitted to go off the site in between lessons or home before the end of the day if you have no other commitments.
Visits, social events and getting involved in activities are important parts of your education. Each year students are encouraged to take the opportunities provided to visit universities and institutions of Higher Education prior to choosing courses. Field trips, conferences, residentials, community service, sport, peer mentoring, e-mentoring etc will all help to enrich your Post 16 experience. The Sixth Form organises a series of social occasions including quizzes, a Christmas Do and Sponsored Events like Comic Relief.
Students also have the opportunity to join in and organise life in the Sixth Form through the Council. The students elect representatives from the tutor groups every year to put forward your ideas. Together with the Head Boy and Girl the Council plan social events and put forward students views regarding Sixth Form affairs. The Council gives you the means to make your voice heard.
Working Together As A Team
The Head of Sixth Form - Miss Pickford and her team are here to support and guide you towards making the most of the opportunities that exist in Maltby Academy Sixth Form. Remember that we have the advantage of knowing most of you well and are going to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. The Sixth Form team can draw on a vast range of expertise and have years of experience of working with senior students.
Tutor Groups - Your tutor is here to work with you in a partnership built on respect and trust, to give you help and guidance with your studies, career and any problems that you might face.
Post 16 Learning Mentor - Mrs Barber will be available to help students on all Level 2 courses during timetabled support sessions. She will support students by helping with the completion of portfolios, to develop Key Skills, help with revision, offer personal counselling and give guidance on work related issues.
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
Many of our students will be entitled to a weekly allowance of £10, £20 or £30 depending of household income. Those families with income levels below £19,000 per year will receive the full £30 rate per week of EMA whereas those families on incomes nearer to £30,000 per year then students are not entitled to any additional allowance. The money will be paid directly into a student's bank account. The payment of the allowance is dependent upon the students meeting certain targets including regular attendance on the course. Students may also receive bonuses of £100 if they remain on their course and make good progress with their learning.
